Surfing Goes Pink

Here's a pretty cool article that I found on Australia's Sunshine Coast Daily: Julian Wilson's pink board and breast cancer.  The Australian pro surfer's mother survived breast cancer and now he is spreading awareness of the disease to a hard-to-reach demographic.

REAL men wear pink.

Pro surfers Julian Wilson and Mick Fanning will wear pink boardies and ride pink surfboards when the Quicksilver Pro starts at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The Coolum-bred Wilson has recruited his Gold Coast mate in an effort to spread the word to younger women - from 18 to 30 in particular - to take no chances and make sure they are regularly screened for breast cancer.

Wilson's boardies and surfboard have been designed by his mother Nola, a breast cancer survivor.

"Julian has no hesitation at all in understanding how tragic it can be," Mrs Wilson said.

"There's nobody who doesn't know somebody who has had it."

This is the fifth year Wilson has been involved in the campaign, which so far has raised $100,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

"He's excited to have Mick on board," Mrs Wilson said.

"Between the two of them, they've got the mantra: 'United we stand for a cure'.''
