Saquarema Run And Won

The Oakley Saquarema Prime was taken out overnight by Aussie madman Kai Otton, though unless you follow any number of pro surfers in Twitterland, you’d struggle to know. If you could make it past the awful commentary, which lagged some five minutes behind the stop-go animation that masqueraded as the live feed, you’d have seen what appeared to be the perfect storm going down: ten foot closeouts, unmanned jetskis washing around in the impact zone, and if you squinted at just the right time the occasional rash vest in survival stance gunning for a (non-existent) shoulder.

 

Wasn’t a bad run for the Aussies, with Kai Otton, who has been struggling for results in the Big Leagues this year claiming a huge win, and perennially almost-qualified West Aussie Yadin Nicol making the semis. A bit of scouting has uncovered the following: Otto has jumped from 56th to 38th in the World Rankings, Yades has gone from 39th to 33rd, and quarter-finalists Adam Robertson and Lincoln Taylor are now 62nd and 71st respectively.

 So, some huge moves for the Aussies. But, with three more WT events and two more Primes before the mid-year chop, whereby the Top 32 on the Rankings become the new Top 32 and get to compete in 2011’s remaining WT events (c’mon, you understand all this by now, right?) nobody is claiming anything. Hopefully be an official press release out soon, to tell y’all what actually went down. And will no doubt include a million "Victory At Sea" lines.
